Hornsea Town vs Mill Lane Men

Hornsea taste defeat for the first time in six weeks as they fall to the probable winners of the Sponsors cup!

Today’s quarter final took place at Broadgates playing fields in Walkington and was shaping up to be a tasty affair between two in form teams. Unfortunately for Town they suffered the loss of four players prior to kick off and current star man Sam Baldwins alarm had failed to go off resulting in him missing kick off. Mill Lane who were made up of predominantly the Humber premier leagues Walkington AFC players were rampant from the get go. Town played some good football but found themselves 2-0 down within 15 minutes following an 18 yard cross goal bullet and a pin point free kick. Baldwin arrived and entered the game but even with the talented midfield that Town had, Mill Lanes strikes were just two good. Hornsea stole one back through Baldwin as he danced through the defensive line to score. Yorke, Leyland and Revell also came close but not close enough. The chances came and went but in a nut shell Mill Lane scored 2 excellent free kicks, 3 absolute screamers, a penalty and a well worked goal to claim victory and a place in the semi finals.

Managers note**
Although we were beaten today we can take a lot of positives from the game. Their captain said we were the strongest team they’ve played in the cup and better than most in their league. Everything just fell right for them today. Sometimes you just have to hold your hands up and admit you were beaten by a better team. At the end of the day we are 4th in the league, got to the quarter final in cup consisting of 64 teams and the teams we’ve beaten have all been from two leagues above us. It’s not all bad. We move on to next week and back to the league. I’d like to point out that Mark Stathers was excellent at centre half today and definitely saved it from being a bigger score line. Keeper Scott Wright also made some massive saves. Sam Baldwin x1
